Stranded Geek sits down on his couch wearing cheep Dracula t-shirt & a thick black cloth with chains clipped to the ends as a cape. He grabbed some left over candy he had from passing them out as he was reading the first Twilight book. He rolls his eyes and slams the book shut & throws it into the trashcan with a loud thud as he shouts to the camera.

“WHERE DO THEY COME UP WITH THIS BULL CRAP?”

Spin Fire Studios Presents: Stranded Geek Reviews- Halloween Special, Shantae

Stranded Geek readjusts his cap as has he sits back down to be more comfortable. He waves to camera saying hi.

“Hello friends, and Happy Halloween or Nightmare night as I like to call it. Okay last year we had quite bit of excitement what with a psycho girl planning to drive me insane so I could marry her & all kinds weird crap happened. But this time around no tricks, no monsters, nothing scary, nothing really all that at weird this time around. For those unaware …I am a spineless coward. So horror games & movies don’t really spark my interest. I suppose I could review something that’s Halloween related that isn’t scary like Castlevaina or something but that’s been done. So I’m going to do something a little different, I’m going to focus on the other half of Halloween: …CANDY!  SWEET DELICIOUS CANDY and just what kind of candy, why the best kind of course. Eye Candy, yes my friends we’re gonna be playing a game with a very sexy design character. In fact a lot of the girls in this game are very attractive.”

A clip of Fluttershy is played “Oh…my…”

“Oh don’t worry folks, this a E rated game for everybody. I present to you Shantae for the Game Boy Color by WayForward Technologies. You star as Shantae the half genie hero of save her home Sequin Land from the mischievous pirate Risky Boots. What I find to be amazing is that Matt Bozon is almost the solo creator of the game, he had one other guy help with the graphics and other for the music but for the most of coding & creation it was done by one guy & from the looks of this art...one really LONELY guy. Still it could be worse, at least he's not sitting at home alone talking to a camera about video games few people have heard about all day long ...excuse me I'm gonna go grab some hard cider."

Thankfully in the long run he didn’t actually have ‘hard’ cider just regular.  The minor frustrations in life sometimes get to him.

“Okay so let’s talk game mechanics, the game works like a side scrolling plat-former but actually also acts like a adventure game. In fact many ways it resembles Legend of Zelda II & Castlevaina II.  HOLD IT! Before you start running around screaming like a frighten schoolgirl! Keep this in mind, this was one of the very last of the Game Boy Color games so they have had a lot time to see what worked and what didn’t. The Town’s folk are never cryptic & always helpful the day & night mechanics are smooth even the music transitions nicely and NO annoying text box that you can’t skip to tell you ‘Hey it’s getting dark out!’ I would also recommend talking to people at both times of the day since new people show up and some things are only open at night.”
“The intro stage of the game is actually fairly easy Shantae is off to stop Risky Boots & her pirate baddies the tinkerbats from destroying her home known as Scuttle Town. It starts off as a simple platform jumping game, you attack by whipping your hair back and forth. You’ll want to practice in this stage because the difficulty will spike once you get into the meat of the game. We meet up with our uncle Mimic, who is an inventor, explorer & an archaeologist who mimic’s what he finds, his recent one was a steam powered engine. However Risky Boots has stolen it so it’s off to our first boss fight on Risky’s ship.”

Geek’s eyes widened in surprise he had just read Risky’s lines of dialoged.

“Men, Spank this one extra hard for Mommy!”

The clip of Fluttershy is played again “Oh…my…”

“Really? Didn’t I JUST get done making that joke? Anyway this boss is really easy all you need to get right underneath the canon and when door opens revealing a power keg hit it to deal out damage if your good enough you wont even need to worry about any Tinkerbats coming out to attack either. Once you blow up the cabin that’s sends you over board and you’ll land on one of three pillars with hidden doors on the haul of the ship, Take out the Tinkerbats dropping bombs by jumping from one side to the other wile also dodging them so you don’t get hit. After that we should be good but Risky got away with steam engine & is heading for one of the sacred shrines for some reason, her plan to rig up the steam engine to be super powerful & really rule the 7 seas. Shantae feels like she failed as her home’s guardian genie & it doesn’t help that they don’t know she’s only half genie. Only her uncle & close friends do. Speaking of friends there is only one who might know where Risky Boot is going and what she might be able, our friend Bolo living in Water Town.”

“Speaking of towns, let’s talk about the towns as they are a pretty much the same all around. You have different perspective in town this over the shoulder 3rd person view so we can see Shantae entering places, you can talk to the locals and get all kinds of info to help you out. All of which are useful and not cryptic at all. There are some differences but we’ll get to that. In general you have the Bath House, which is the local spa & is very much like a Pokemon center. You restore your health free of charge. There’s your friends house, where you go to advance the plot or get a reminder of what you need to do. There is a Save Room which you can save your game, you can also save it if you find a statue of the save guy in the middle of wilderness so you don’t need to hike back to town. There is mini game hut which some don’t have & is different for each town. You can go to them to earn more gems which your money in the game. Scuttle Town’s mini game is at night you can visit the Dance Hall. Shantae being a skilled Belly Dancer will be on stage and it works like DDR, you hit the buttons at the right time to the beat and you get more money, there is a skill level setting so I would recommend this one for the easiest fast money making. The higher the rank you pick the more difficult the challenge but you also earn more money. There is also the Warp Squid Hut, in this place you’ll have your first major side quest, in each town a mother warp squid as lost her four babies, if you find them and bring them back to her she’ll teach you a dance to warp back to that town. The good news is there is only one to place to find them, but the weird part is that she isn’t doesn’t really know if they are her babies so it doesn’t matter where you got a baby warp squid…just as along as you give her 4 of them.”

The camera cuts to Stranded Geek and he could tell his views are not exactly thrilled at the idea.

“What? Don’t look at me like that! Okay, look these mama squids know about the other towns, they know it’s hard to keep track of their own kids. I’m sure this is not the first time this happened, and I’m sure they will get it straiten out eventually. Oh yes the dancing, you see being half genie you get powers via special magical dances in this game. And while I would say that it spoils things, inventory spoils it since you can go and check which dance is which. I get back to that in a moment. Last but not least in the town is the shop where you can by stuff. Obvious right? So what stuff can we buy in the shops? Well there are a lot of things but really I didn’t use many of them when I was playing but I’ll go over them all & let you decide. First there’s the vials 1-3 3 being the biggest, they restore your health. To use items you need to select it ahead of time and hit B & up. Vanishing Cream briefly allows you to be invisible to enemies. The Float Muffin allows you bounce and flow across bottomless pits. Escape Candy takes you out of dungeons. Double Mint creates an illusion of you and doubles your attack power. Greed Jars increases the amount of money dropped by baddies. Flash Bolts is an attack item that allows Shantae to send a fire wave to hurt multiple enemies. The Pike Balls create a spike ball shield to protect you  & the Fireball does the same only it deals out more damage but also risks leaving you more venerable. And lastly Storm Puffs create a cloud that floats in one direction & eventually while shoot a lighting bolt down, however you need time it & be in the just right space to use one. Mmmhhmmm”

The camera cuts back to Geek enjoying some really good chocolate only to realize he was caught.

“What? I was hungry! Give me a break!”

“Okay let’s head to Water Town, leaving the town we are back in side scrolling platform jumping goodness. We can go in two directions, to right is the way to Water Town & to the left Oasis Town. Naturally it’s not as easy as it sounds, First off just show a small example of the exploration, we should have enough money from the intro stage to buy some vanishing cream, do so and we’re going to head left. We have Naga women in this so aptly named Naga Wasteland, these Naga Woman are a pain not only do they take a ton of hits but they also have a homing screech attack that could kill you pretty fast. Why are we doing something dangerous? Easy, if we manage to muscle our way through there is small tunnel we can craw though & ladder to climb down into a cave, there is this enemy of a door with eyes using the vanishing cream to become invisible and walk through to get your first Heart Holder and now you have four hits instead of three. Climb your way back jump up top of the cliff your right and we can start our quest proper. This one of those games that require exploring & backtracking through out the game. Now the bad news is there is a bit of backtracking it’s not as bad as you may think & you will be given lots of things to help speed the process along. A small one is the ability to run by holding down the B button. You also have the warp squids I mentioned. So lets talk about that cave, there are several caves in the game, many of which are hidden. Several of them have extra goodies I will mention & few will have Heart Holders, some of which require certain item you can buy at the shop, & some are also short cuts to either secret areas or to others parts of the world. There are 7 Heart Holders in the game maxing you out to 10 hearts, some of those are out in the open but you may need a certain dance power to reach them.”

“So we are heading right back the way we came and now we can head through Scarecrow Fields where this annoying little baddies jump from out of the ground without warning & chuck three spears out you, the endless spawning Scarecrows and the occasional bat or two. This …is one of faults of the game. The difficulty kind of spikes right at the beginning of the game making it very hard to progress without probably abusing items at the shop, if it’s not the hard to dodge spears it’s homing screeches of the Naga Women. But we trudge on and we head into Spider Forest. You’ll find that many of the locations of the wild is so named for some of it’s inhabitants, not really creative I know but this isn’t a game series meant to be taken seriously, and really that’s part of it’s charm it’s simple yet fun. So clearing out spiders & orcs, we pass a shrine and we head to Waterfall Lake, before I continue I will point out there are 3 things in that forest you will want to know about, a tree stump near the beginning of it is hiding a secret short cut, a one of the slopes we had to skip over to even get past it has a Heart Holder that we’ll want to grab once we get a certain dance later. And lastly that shrine which I talk about later. Going left and falling down the waterfall, there are holes with endless spawning snakes, which we can use to farm off gems for. You’ll watch to be careful because Shantae can’t swim and sometimes a catfish monster likes to poke its head out of the waterfall to chop at you. If you head left there is ladder we can take to a hidden waterfall but we can’t do anything there yet so keep going right for now, make your way all the way over to the right avoiding the mutant fish men though they are pretty easy. After that we have reached Water Town.”

“Water Town is more of a Greek theme while Scuttle Town was Persian or Arabian themed. It’s a nice place & it has all the usual, however instead of a mini game place we do have something else of interest. A Firefly Shrine, it’s too dark to see but there is some kind of scroll. Our Goal as hinted in this shrine is to gather up as many fireflies as we can, 12 in all. They are in the open & they only show up at night. Some of which we can’t reach unless we have certain magic dance as you might have guessed. Water Town also has something rare in its shop that will be a must for if we want to stop Risky Boots faster. They have what is called the Fighter’s Equipment. Several items that when bought will give Shantae a new fighting ability. They came be pretty expensive with the Tiara being 900 gems. So we can do one of two things, we can wait until we have enough or we can go leave Water Town, go to left where we came & grind on Snakes that spawn not to far from the entrance of the town. This will take time what ever you do is up to you. The Boots being the cheapest allows Shantae to do a Guile inspired Flash Kick that spins her upwards by double tapping up. The Sash only works after you have the boots, Double tap up to do the spin kick & then hit the attack button to do drill diagonal kick that is much more powerful. The Braces allow Shantae to charge up an elbow dash attack that you use when holding down the B button. However it is dangerous to use as it does take a bit to charge & it can send you into a spike pit, which are instant kill. And Lastly the Tiara upgrades your this dash attack so to that if you hit the attack button again during it you go flying into a twirling arch in the air that will do a good amount of damage in to badies. Do your shopping and let’s talk to Bolo, he’s a nice guy who dreams of being a tough hero but he’s also a bit of a knuckle head as he likes to drool over pretty girls especially Risky Boots though is more of a brother to Shantae.”

“Wait a moment, a plain looking guy with spiky hair and goes nuts over cute girls? Why does that sound so familiar?”

The computer plays a clip from the Pokemon anime showing Brock eating an onigiri rice ball. “These jell doughnuts are delicious, nothing beats a jelly filled doughnut.”

“He reveals that he foolishly told Risky about the Dibble Fountain that shrine in the forest we past. Which holds 1 of the 4 magic stones the Dribble tablet. We’ll need to get it before Risky does so let’s get back there Bolo says he’ll go on head & wait for us and help us open it for us when we get there. So let’s go! And true to his word he throws his bolo weapon at the fountain to get it open. Ah but we arrive only a few seconds too late as Risky Boot’s has just made it in as is taking the faster route. We’ll have to beat her to it, taking out water grate we can crawl into our first dungeon the Dribble Fountain proper. Like the towns each shrine or labyrinth in the game has a bit of a patter to it & can be summed up with a checklist much like in Zelda. This where we’ll also be able to find the baby warp squids. There are five in total of a dungeon but we can’t reach one until we have later ability with final shrine being the exception. Every dungeon also has a very simple to understand puzzle to gain a key to unlock more places. This one has a very simple patter, you’re given a wall patter to memorize or write down. Then you’ll find a pillar that you can whack with your hair whip to spin the segments into the correct order. The only time it ups the challenge a bit is when one of the segments falls a part due to age so you’ll need go around find a spare one then constantly crouching down hitting it with your hair to push it & get back to the pillar. If and when you reach a certain room where the music changes you’ll have found the guardian genie that used to protect this place. Out of gratitude for rescuing her she’ll teach you a magic dance to turn into a monkey. The Monkey form can allow Shantae to jump higher and climb up wall edges. How do you dance anyway? Well that’s easy when you hit the select button you go into dance mode this does leave you open to attacks will cancel you out if you get hit. Once in dance mode on your HUD display at the bottom you’ll see a music note and 4 stars, when the first star & music note lights up hit a button to do a dance move, when it lights up again in the next button. It has beat rhythm to it, but trust me. I’m musically challenged and have a very bad rhythm so believe me when I say you can do it. Continue to explore, possibly backtrack to make sure you got all the squids you can. We will eventually find that we are too late Risky has found the Dribble Stone. However before she can steal it a Giant tentacle monster shows up for our first dungeon boss. This guy has a every obvious weak spot of his cyclopean eye. Avoid his spinning attacks and turn into the Monkey, remember the patter is down & right, use it to climb the walls when he tries to flood it. ”

“After several hits he dies & the Dribble Stone is yours, sweet! Getting automatically teleported out Bolo tells us about how the magic stones have great power, if Risky Boots gets them she’ll no doubt use them to super charge the steam engine to build something powerful & rule both the land & the sea. The next one is Golem Stone is hidden in the Golem Mine in the desert to west near Oasis Town. So that means we need to head back to the Naga Wasteland. If you grabbed enough gems you might have enough to get the Sash but if you don’t, you should have enough to get the boots already. Just remember that the sash doesn’t work without the boots & the tiara doesn’t work without the cuffs. I don’t think I mentioned it so I will here, there are 3 kinds of gems, small are worth 1, a medium is worth 5 & a big one is worth 20. Also I should mention that this game has a live system which seems weird, but the good news is dieing the game isn’t too much of a punishment. If you lose a life you start at the entrance of a screen, meaning if you die in the middle of a room of a dungeon you start at the beginning of that room. Lose all your lives and you load from a save point. Anyway now that we can turn into a monkey we can head back to where we got our first heart holder. Instead of going down that ladder gain, we can climb as the monkey on the left cliff wall, you’ll need to be careful as the monkey can’t attack yet there’s a power up for all your transformations but we can’t get the first one until we have our next one. Eventually should come to another ladder in the middle of the wasteland, take it down into the cave and head left watch out for the bats, exit the other side and we have reached the Ladies Dessert. So named for the Scorpion Women.  And yes of course they look hot…they live in a DESSERT!”

A rim shot is played, and Geek face palms, he really needed to get better at telling jokes.

“Anyway, the Scorpion Women like to get in close for their sting attack, so be careful. Other than that and this tall pincer monsters that are pretty easy to kill & jumping over cacti, this area is pretty easy to deal with. Here we are in Oasis Town, outside of the norm we have the Gecko Chamber a mini game based on luck where you roll the dice against an opponent. Highest number wins, if you’re really lucky and have your Gecko reach the top by wining enough times you get a bonus so you will walk away with a 250 gems to spend. Other than that there’s not here worth mentioning. After you’ve done your shopping and relaxing soak in a bath, visit Shantae’s friend Sky she raises war birds and because she can’t come with Shantae to help her she sends her pet falcon Wrench to help her. So where is the Golem Mine? Why in the Mens Dessert of course, however it isn’t to the left of Oasis Town, we have to head back through Ladies Dessert then back to the Naga Wasteland and head left of the ladder to enter it. Man Scorpions actually have stomp attack and then slam their tails into the sand and come up from the ground your standing on so it’s easier to get in close. You’ll also need to watch out for these annoying beetles that shoot energy balls in an overhead spread arch. Once we’re at the dungeon Wrench uses his beak like a wrench, see not just a silly name, and opens the door for us. You find that that’s the patter of the game, you go to a town & talk to a friend to advance the plot, and then you go to the dungeon and they open door for you. You beat the dungeon and then you head to the next town. So yeah really basic, and while I could just say repeat as needed I’m not going to be lazy about this review, this is a game to really enjoy especially the characters.”

“The Golem Mine actually is also pretty simple in it’s layout most of it being one elevator with branching paths. The Puzzle of this labyrinth is Magnetism & color. Certain objects and badies will be either pulled towards or pushed away from you depending on whether your red or blue, you change colors by go through these magnetic fields and sometimes you’ll want avoid them because you need to be a certain color to complete certain objectives. Don’t forget to keep an eye open for Baby Warp Squids hidden in all kinds of areas. When we find the guardian genie of this place she’ll teach us the Elephant dance. Turing to a elephant allows us do a ramming dash attack though we can’t jump as high as we normally do in human form. The dance sequence is down & left, I must say the dance moves are not only easy to remember & practice but also really good to look at the animation is fluid and really high quality for a Game Boy color game. There is a elephant statue which if you ram into one it will shake some spikes down and you can continue on your away and you can ram into other things like stalagmites & stalactites among others. Elephant Shantae can instant kill these rock monsters with no problem at all. Meeting up with Risky Boots we once again make the mistake of waking up a giant Golem. Oh Now this guy I found to be really easy. Ramming into the elephant statue to stun him and get his hands to level you can jump then spam your ramming attack into his face a lot and he’ll go down in no time, just be careful of his hands not crushing you.  We grab the Golem Stone and leave back to Oasis Town. Sky tells us that the only ones who maybe able to help us is a Zombie Caravan that travels around at night & is currently stationed in a swamp on the Far East side of Water Town. And I hope you manage to learn the warp dance there cause it’s a long hike to get back to Water Town & even LONGER hike to get to this Caravan.”

Exhausted from this half of the review Stranded Geek drinks some cider.

“Sheesh, this isn’t as bad as say Zelda but I hate it when you have to hike one side of the world then hike to the OTHER far side of the world, then hike BACK to just complete your quest, I mean wouldn’t it make more sense to find dungeons in a more convenient matter going to places that’s local?  I mean it doesn’t really say I have to have some powers or whatever in order to get to places, but then I suppose it would be silly even if it did. So yeah heading back, oh yeah you know that tree stump in the Spider Forest I mentioned you’ll want to enter that you know clear that area out while your at it. You know wouldn’t you know it we’re actually halfway through the game already. I’m serious there’s only the 4 shrines & then final area. That’s it, ordinarily I would complain that it was being artificially extending the game time but really it doesn’t feel like a short game but it also doesn’t feel like you spent a eternity playing it. Since I’m not really gonna go tell you where all the extra goodies are for simplicity let me just say you need to explore every area if you get to a place come back when you get a new power. There are tree stumps & block you can smash, high platforms you can’t reach yet until we get the harpy dance, which again is spoiled by inventory screen. There 12 fireflies you’ll want to grab like I said 7 heart holders in all. There are also the 4 talismans that power up our four transformation dances. Since we have half of them I’ll tell you the first two. The first one is the Monkey’s Claw.  This allows you to attack as the monkey with a claw swipe attack that does about as much damage as your hair whip. The Elephant Tote allows Shantae in her elephant form to do a ground pound attack. You’ll want to grab these power ups as they are exceptionally useful & save your hide while being in an animal form. The scroll inside the Firefly shrine once you get them all teaches you a Dance that spends 10 gems for every one heart to refill, so if you have 1 out of 10 hearts that 90 gems out of your pocket which is actually not that bad really. The only thing else you should now is that there are 2 other caves that require an item from the shop. There is cave with a bottomless pit you need to cross if you don’t have the harpy dance use a float muffin, which is, rather cheep to get. There a weird little boy clown wants to see lots of girls dance so use a double mint & dance form him if your really lucky he’ll float into the ceiling spikes & you get your Heart Holder unhindered who has heard of such a thing?”

Stranded Geek smiles at the thought his crafty clever alluring alliteration.

“So anyway we head left past Water Town into the Rainstorm River the only to note besides the Reaper enemies & this little brown guys that shoot fire from their movies is that there is a firefly here at night. Just don’t fall into the river and you should be good. We now enter the Sail Wasteland, Filled with Giant Snails, which sound terrifying How can I hope to beat giant snails? Well they don’t move at all so I just wail on them out their biting reach and then watch as their huge shell sinks into the dirt or just wait until nightfall when they good to sleep and just hop over their shells…that was easy what aren’t so easy are the Mantis badies that can deal a lot of damage & they can throw fireballs too. Secret areas that lead to shortcuts nothing all that special in this place maybe a firefly or two keep going into the Zombie Swamp. Gee I wonder what’s here? This Swamp is a pain you have constant spawning zombies and you have to jump from one mossy pillar to another. There is the Cackle Mound the 3rd shrine but we’ll need help to open it. Moving on a bit and we reach the Zombie Caravan. Now I know you have a few questions, what makes these Zombies not evil compaired to the ones that tried to kill Shantae? Answer? Those evil ones are Wild Zombies & according to my research of this series they don’t drink coffee. I’m not even kidding. I should mention that you should have in your possession at least 4 warp squids if you don’t that’s okay but I would seriously recommend you give their Mama Squid some kids because this Caravan does indeed travel & you can only find it at night. They are only here in this spot exactly for the plot & then they will move around the whole map. They also sell those Greed Jars for a good low price. We’ll want the Wagon that says ‘Keep Out’ on it. Here we meet a new …friend for lack of better word a cute zombie girl named Rottytops.  This the first time I have ever bought the idea of someone making a Zombie Girl attractive. She’s a tough girl too that tends to have bit of an attitude she’ll only help us if we beat her in a race. It’s pretty easy hold right jump when you see a block, slide by pressing down to go through a hallow log, don’t run into anything and you’ll win. Rottytops does agree to help, Now outside of this one part she unlike your other friends doesn’t remind you where you need to go later, if you talk to her after you beat the dungeon you can challenger to a race again and earn 40 gems easy. Outside of the dancing mini game I would go to her to earn some fast cash.”

“So heading back to Cackle Mound Rottytops picks the lock with the bone of her leg….kind of creepy but she’s a zombie what did you expect? She also gives us some very useful advice there are certain shadow areas where we can hind & monsters won’t see us or harm us. This will come in handy, as there are areas where they spawn skeletons, I would also suggest going here to grind for gems since they constantly spawn them you can’t get hurt & they drops gems too so get a greed jar & have it. The puzzles of this dungeon are probably the worst out of all them. You’re goal is smack this eyeball with your hair and get into bounce into monster statue’s eye socket. There is even one that has two eyes and you can just as easily knock it lose, and you’ll want to remember that because sometimes you need to get the eye to look at something for him to open his mouth & drop the key. My favorite bit is the one that you make the statue start a stone carving of a girl. Hehehe the developers knew…they know. I would also be very careful in the place there are a lot of spikes which can kill you instantly. Meeting up with our next dance instructor teaches us the Spider Dance which naturally transformers us into…eeewwww a very creepy spider. I must say it is very well animated again awesome stuff but man I hate spiders. Uuuuggghhhh she even her crawling is creepy too. She can also climb and stick to certain walls in the backgrounds like spider webs. Once you clear out place and got all the squids you can you want to head back near the enterance the climb up to a higher place and go to the left where you can only ascend via the Spider webs. Risky shows up only to yet again run away from the fight of this new boss a Mad Max inspired monster with wheels. You’ll want to use spider form to claw on the walls to avoid getting run over. You’ll need to get close but be sure to give yourself room to get away once he transforms in to wheel mode. Beat him and we have Sizzle Stone & Shantae has gotten beyond thunder dome!”

A counter that says Beyond Thunder Dome count: 1 shows up on screen with Geek grinning.

“And so the game begins…. Anyway RottyTops tells her to head for Mount Pointy to reach Twinkle Palace for the last stone. There’s only one way to get there since we can’t fly…yet which is the long way around pass Mud Bog left of Oasis Town. Since there’s only few things we need to right anyway go head and explore Ghost Forest & beyond that the Archer’s Forest. You’ll want to find the short cuts as well as get the fireflies & Heart Holders. In the Ghost Forest you’ll want to be careful of not just the ghosts but these huge beetles crawling on the trees they can’t hurt you unless you stand under them and they drop on you also you can’t kill them no matter what so watch out. The Archer women shoot their magic arrows at you in angles and can fly tricky but doable. After raiding the forests the far left would take us to Mount Pointy …did I mention this was a silly game?  Anyway we need warp back to Oasis Town. Also if you haven’t done so be sure to grab the warrior cuffs & tiara do some grinding to get those, they make dealing with some of the baddies in this game really easy. The Mud bog is …disturbing I don’t get this place at all. There are slime monster women, ink monsters, trees that are made of bugs. What is even the hay man? Even weirder if you climb the bug trees as spider apparently there is some kind atmosphere magic thing cause even at the daytime you can see into outer space. There are some goodies to be had in this place so make sure you use your powers to find them. Oh yeah speaking of since you can be a spider now you can go to spider forest & pick up that heart holder I mentioned near the beginning of the review. This is where I got the most use of Fighter’s Equipment it really does pay off for getting it. The drill kick wastes those slime women. Leaving the Bog we are now in the Eagle Wasteland. These Eagle Men…these guys…are unfreaken believable.”

“You cannot take these guys in close range the slightest hit and they spam their sword attack, which reaps at lot of damage. The only way I know to waste them effectively is to use my Twirling attack when I got the Tiara. There are two branching paths going strait to the far left is the final town Bandit Town. Bandit Town is a place where the baddies of the game when not out killing Shantae go to chill. You don’t have a friend living here so the best place to hit the Rusty Gullet the local pub. But before we advance the plot, we need to make our game advance. See because this game came out so late in the Game Boy Color’s life WayForward actually coded the game for a special gimmick, see the Game Boy Advance was backwards compatible meaning you could still play your old game boy games on them. However Shantae is the first game I’m aware of that is forward compatible. If you play this game on a Gba you will not only get a higher looking quality of graphics but also there is house in Bandit Town that will teach you a secret dance for 500 gems. The graphics are noticeably great I mean they aren’t 16-bit but they are brighter and cleaner looking. The secret dance of down, up, up will turn Shantae into a Tinkerbat and has all kinds abilities. You can jump as high as a monkey you can climb both on edges and walls like the spider & monkey, you can swing your cutlass to attack no item to power up and you can do a ram attack like the elephant. I love the Tinkerbat running animation it’s like Shantae realized she’s turned into one and is flailing her arms in the air as she panics!”

Stranded Geek gets up and mimics the Tinkerbat running back and forth with his arms flailing in the air.  “WAAAAHHHHHH! WAAAAHHHHHH!”

“Since we just a special dance let’s celebrate with a pint at the Rusty Gullet. Drinks all around maties I’ve just learned a new dance to earn some booty by shaking me own Arhahahahaarg! Speaking to Bandit Town’s new guardian genie who looks oddly familiar in a way, she agrees to help us open Twinkle Palace. We to head back to Eagle Wasteland but this time instead of going strait left when we first came here to enter the town we need to head up and to the left & climb our way to Twinkle Palace. Mount Pointy itself is filled with snowy hills than if you some how manage to climb careful because if you don’t you’ll slide right down & have to climb all the way back up. Once we reach the palace the genie…just shacks her rear to hit the hidden switch to open the gate. OH COME ON SHANTAE COULD HAVE DONE THAT! This genie doesn’t sound all that mystical to me. You don’t think? Naahhh. Okay inside the palace we have an interesting mini boss fight rooms, I didn’t mention this before because I forgot too but I will now all of the dungeons have certain enemies that you have to have a locked room fight meaning the doors close & don’t open until you finish them. This dungeon happens to have a ice block with a roulette gimmick to it. You have to break it open by ramming it as the elephant and one of them will jump out to fight you. There’s the Lobster Cyclopes from Dibble Fountain, the Golems from Golem Mines, and the Succubus from Cackle Mound. I would naturally suggest you try and go for the Golems since they can be taken out in one shot with the elephant it would save you the hassle of transforming back so soon. The Lobster guys are pain with their blocking which hurts you have to get real close and wait for a opening to hit them in the eye and keep doing it until they die. The Succubus is actually the second easiest really she likes to jump around a lot and hit you diagonally with her whip, Hair whip her in the back and if you move good enough you can get her into a stun patter of hitting her jumps to the other side of you and you can hit her again and the process repeats in a major stun lock do good enough and you may never take a hit. The puzzle of this place is annoying cause it can kill you really easily, as if this game didn’t have blind jumps of faith already that can kill you this one also tempts fate. There are these red & yellow spinners you jump into one as human form because a spinning elephant would just be silly, you then can either A: hit a direction to be sent flying that direction or B: cancel it out with the B button. Your goal is to fly from one spinner to another in their set patterns to get from one place to another and naturally it’s harder than it sound cause there are stuff you’ll want to try and get but some of the patterns don’t let you go there so you have to find another way.”

“However this will be over with when we meet with the last Guardian Genie and get Shantae’s last magical dance, the Harpy dance, as a Harpy you can fly by jump and the rapidly tapping the A button to keep flapping your wings to stay in the air. Very useful the annoying giant canon balls that roll out to smash you and shove you into instant kill spikes. Our final dungeon boss in the game is a little guy riding a dragon, this to me was the easiest boss in the game. You need to is turn into a Harpy and then fly up and round and start bouncing on his head Mario style then he’ll fall, you turn back & hit him with your whip, do it several times and he’s done. Weird thing is we haven’t seen Risky Boots at all. Oh hey the genie stand around and… there she is turns out the Genie was Risky Boots all a long!”

The camera cuts to Geek with a shocked face as a dramatic DUN DUN DUUUHHHNNN tune is played.

“Yeah, I totally saw this one coming a mile away, She steels the magic stones and ties her up, & just leaves her there. Instead of you know shooting her maybe cut her head off with her big cutlass, I mean it’s not like she can do anything. Oh well not two minuets after she leaves Shantae unties herself and plans to head back to Scuttle Town hopefully Uncle Mimic can give us an idea of what to do. Before we leave this is where we can now do all our last minuet exploring & shopping to beat the game. You should have if you haven’t done so by now have all of the fighter’s equipment. From Twinkle Palace you can go left which will take you back around to Archer’s Forest. Since you also have your Harpy form you can now fly to high places and get things you couldn’t reach even as the monkey or spider. In Mud Bog there is on top of the one of those bug trees that are never explained the power up relic for the spider dance called Spider’s Venom. It allows you to shoot a toxic projectile from your mouth in spider form it’s not as strong as your hair whip but you can rapid fire it really fast so you can actually do even more damage faster. And if you backtracked the Scarecrow fields there are some ruins which you can get the last power up the Harpy’s Claw. Which allows you to do a devastating claw swipe that instant kills most badies in the game. The problem with the Harpy form is there is a bit of a moment thing going on that makes Harpy Shantae slippery if you run for a short bit and then stop you don’t stop on a dime like you normally would. I know when it comes to these kinds of adventure games, It can be rather boring of me to repeat the shopping list of all the goodies in the game, and while unlike say Metroid you don’t need to 100% this game, but this kind of mindset helps you, this why your given the ample amount of time to do this kind of thing & they give you a few reasons to make this game worth backtracking for. Really you can also used your escape candy if you bought it to leave the dungeon before you fought the boss to go get the loot before hand but really you wouldn’t be saving anytime on things. So just to be thorough make sure you go back to all the previous dungeons to get the last baby warp squids, by having all the dances you can get to every place in the game so you can find them all in the dungeons now. Trading in the warp squids you should now be able to warp everywhere including the Zombie Caravan. You can reach all those missing fireflies and learn the magic healing dance. You should have all four relics to power up your transformation dance; you should have a maximum of 10 hearts because you should have grabbed 7 Heart Holders. And that should be it the only thing left is secret dance of turning into a Tinkerbat if you played this on the GBA.”

“Talk Mimic and he tells you he’s not quite sure where to find Risky’s Hideout the only possible to maybe get an idea is to fly really high into air and maybe spot something. Which actually does give me an idea. A few Oasis Town folks have mentioned that there is special magical Spyglass in the floating ruins in the middle of the Ladies Dessert. Warp to Oasis Town the head right into the dessert then dance to become the harpy and fly up and to the right to find the Magic Spyglass. The Spyglass says in order to use its power to see it must look through Shantae, soul wise it means. Seeing her heart as pure for wanting to save her home from destruction it allows Shantae to see Risky’s island and uses it’s powers to send us there & we can go back if we touch the magic light when we get there if there was something you wanted to go back & get like stocking up on a few health potions. Really this place is easy especially if you have the tinkerbat dance but the only down side is that form can’t crawl into the pipes of the steam vents. Risky must be freaking out wondering why one her minions have gone rouge. But really ram as elephant to take out pillars and climb as both the spider & the monkey. Really you should just have fun and go crazy. Why? Well because…”

Geek grins as he points in the air to cue the music.

She's a maniac maniac on the floor
And she's dancing like she's never danced before
She's a maniac maniac on the floor
And she's dancing like she's never danced before

“And Finally we reach Risky Boots, she established when she was gloating when Shantae was tied up that her goal is use the stones & Uncle Mimic’s steam engine to build a huge machine so she can conquer both the land & sea. Her giant Tinker Tank! We’ll have to stop it and really it’s pretty easy once you fall from her trap door, you fall on top of the machine, use your Harpy form to fly up and get in side the head, once inside the tank we need to throw a wrench into her plans an monkey wrench that is. Climb as the monkey into the arms and attack the gears, the first two gears well then reveal the first two stones & then the second set of gears in the hands, smash those and you’ll reveal unlock the other two stones, break all the stones and then smash the engine. A HUGE EXPLOSION occurs and we on the wrecked island, Risky really cheesed now wants finally wants to fight us one on one. She has a lot of attacks, if you have saved up some fireball shields & flash waves now is a good time to use them, I also suggest using your spider venom attacks too. Dodge her Slash attack as well her firing her pistol and her more dangerous slides and aerial dash attacks. When you do enough damage half way through you’ll knock her hat off. She’ll also do this really annoying move where she’ll throw her sword in spin attack just forward enough that can really hurt if you run into it. Beat her and she runs away in defeat as the whole island starts to blow, you’ll automatically transform into Harpy Shantae and you have one last thing to do which to fly and avoid fireballs in the volcano to escape. And it’s game over, we watch as Shantae is pulled into the legendary Genie realm the guardian genies we rescued are grateful that they are willing to turn Shantae into a full Genie like she always wanted and live in the Genie Realm a perfect paradise as genies aren’t meant to meddle with mortal affairs. Sadly Shantae gave her dream because she didn’t want to leave her friends & family behind. And she is returned back to Scuttle Town, Shantae apologized and Uncle Mimic understands, maybe the world isn’t ready for steam power yet. Shantae also decides to tell the mayor about being only a Half Genie. The Mayor understands & grateful as well but also asks if he could still hire her at half price & it’s over. A silly ending for a silly game!”

Stranded Geek shook his head drinking some cider, clearly rolling his eyes at the goofy ending.

“I never heard of this game until recently when I learned that Shantae was getting a 4 game via a Kickstarter and folks you should help this series out. Shantae is an amazing game & truly a lost gem that really deserves a lot of love. The First game is on Virtual Console right now so go and get it! The minor flaws are nitpicks at best. The animation is smooth, the jokes are funny, and the characters are lovably cute. If you haven’t also done so continue Shantae’s silly adventures with Risky’s Revenge on the DSi & keep an eye open for the two new games, Shantae & the Pirates Curse & Shantae the Half Genie Hero. The music is awesome really capturing the ariabian style. It may have been on of the last games to be on the Game Boy Color but man did it ever go out with a bang. Even the silly mess-ups in the game get poked fun it later games. This is a series that knows it’s silly & doesn’t try to be anything more than what it is, & what it is, is just plain fun. Now I know I have been making jokes about how attractive Shantae & the girls are. But the more I think about it, the more cautious I should become. I mean think about it for a moment, a lot of the monster girls are dangerous; Risky used her feminine charms to trick Bolo into helping her. And how fitting that one of Shantae’s newest forms she’ll being getting in Half Genie Hero will be a Succubus form. All I’m saying is yeah there’s eye candy a little too much candy is bad for you, and we all know to stay away from creepy monster dude, but sometimes we should be careful of those smooth talking ladies that seem really into you. Either way have a safe Halloween folks, I’ll see you next time!”
